This is what I get for watching a video for TLC's "Waterfalls" right before going to sleep
This morning’s shower singalong setlist was a medley of late 90’s-early 00’s R&B. So, while I was getting myself clean and good-smelling, I was belting out everything from Ginuwine to 112 to Nelly. Aside from annoying the hell out of my neighbors, revisiting these tunes reminded me of a few things.
- My musical taste from middle through high school was questionable at best.
- Almost all of those songs were hilariously filthy.
- Every R&B song from 1995-2002 gives me flashbacks of being at a school dance, awkwardly flailing my body about to the rhythm of the song and praying that the next track is a slow dance song.
- My pick for funniest song of my childhood? Next’s “Too Close”. The entire song is about getting an erection while dancing with a girl, for crying out loud! If that’s not funny, I don’t know what is.
- Actually, the funniest thing that R&B gave us in that era was Sisqo. The guy was about 4’11”, he dyed his hair silver so his head looked like a Christmas ornament, and he kept insisting that he was a dragon. Also, he wrote a lyric that went, “Thong thong thong thong thong.”
And this is why I’m not going to watch Youtube videos of ridiculous music from my early teenage years past 9PM ever again.
Edit: Thanks to Kate for providing the video that set all of this madness in motion.
